At the top of the page - Before The Fall, Salthouse10 bought by Alison Burns a choral music writer choir director and generally wonderful woman.
The diptych Before The Fall has Phaedra on the left and Ziggy on the right - thanks to their mums and dads for my models. The painting has Salthouse as the Garden of Eden, with references to it's landscape and wildlife, the sea and the shingle bank that strives to keep it at bay, the graffiti scratched into the wood of the choir stalls in St Nicholas church, the plants and insects and the old Suffolk custom of Wren Day.
It also has whispers of the myth of Phaedra and Hippolytus - the sea horse is a representative of Poseidon who causes the death of Hippolytus by frightening the horses pulling his chariot and he was killed.
The text on the left panel "love is merciless" (Phaedra, having failed at seducing her stepson Hippolytus, killed herself leaving a note for her husband that Hipplytus tried to rape her ) text on the right panel "beneath hooves of horses"
Bee Lament - Bombus Lamentor. An image of 34 dead bees found on a woman's drive in the USA killed by neonicitinoid pesticides used on a nearby field, a list of the food plants pollinated by bees and a quote attributed to Einstein float in front of a summer sky. Selected for Elements at the Forum and also exhibited alongside the Bee Crisis Installation for Heart Mind Computer at the Sainsbury Center, University of East Anglia, Norwich 2011.
The remaining paintings pay homage to Jenny Holzer. I used selected Truisms as starting points creating visual images to accompany her pithy and insightful text. It is difficult to read the dark text on Flora - it reads " a name can mean a lot just by itself"
